BC’s Jeter earns ODAC honors

Bridgewater junior defensive end Dominic Jeter (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Defensive Player of the Week honors for his outstanding performance in Saturday’s 19-14 season opening victory at St. Vincent.

Jeter, a junior from Yorktown, Va., proved to be a disrupting force for the Eagles defense in their 19-14 win over St.Vincent. Jeter recorded six tackles from his defensive end post, including 3.5 tackles for a loss. He was a thorn in the SVC quarterback’s side as he recorded three of the Eagles four quarterback sacks. He cost SVC 16 yards of offense.

His efforts helped the BC defense hold St. Vincent to 239 total yards and a 3.7 yards per play average.

The honor is the first conference honor of the year for the Eagles.

VMI’s Rainey-Wiles honored by Big South

Senior return specialist Michael Rainey-Wiles (Pittsburgh, Pa./ North Hills H.S.) has been named Big South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for games play in the period Sept. 2-4. The league office in Charlotte, N.C. made the announcement Monday.

In VMI’s 48-6 win over Lock Haven last Saturday in Lexington, Rainey-Wiles returned four punts for 112 yards, including a 52-yarder for a touchdown in the third quarter. It was his first career punt return TD and VMI’s first punt return for a score since Tim Maypray went 86 yards to the endzone against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 3, 2009. Rainey-Wiles also had punt returns of 29 and 20 yards that gave the Keydets great field possession Saturday, and he also returned the opening kickoff 31 yards that eventually led to VMI’s first points of the game.

Rainey-Wiles becomes the first Keydet football player to win a BSC Special Teams award since Maypray received the citation for the 2009 Gardner-Webb game.

Rainey-Wiles also made his debut on the defensive side of the ball against Lock Haven as he made his first start at cornerback after playing three seasons at wide receiver. He was credited for three solo tackles against the Bald Eagles.
 

UVa’s Aboushi among ACC honorees

Virginia sophomore offensive lineman Oday Aboushi was named Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week by the Atlantic Coast Conference for his play in the Cavaliers’ season-opening 34-13 win over Richmond on Saturday.

Aboushi started his first contest for the Cavaliers, leading the offensive line with seven pancake blocks. He helped Virginia rush for 205 yards after the Cavaliers only topped the 200-yard rushing total once in 2009. Virginia averaged 5.9 yards per rush.

Aboushi was part of an offensive line that allowed just one sack Saturday after surrendering 41 in 2009.
