Viewer-supported WVPT presents “Hunter’s Raid” on Sunday, June 17th at 8 p.m. During four years of brutal fighting, pivotal battles took place all across the country. But in May and June of 1864, all eyes were on the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where Union General David Hunter, operating under the direct orders of Ulysses S. Grant, marched southward to drive out confederate forces.

This is the story of the renowned general and thousands of soldiers who fought for and against him and thousands more residents of the Shenandoah Valley affected by Hunter’s Raid. Five years in production, this documentary recounts Union General David Hunter’s raid through Virginia.

Beginning at the Battle of Piedmont, Hunter raided Staunton, Lexington, Buchanan, Peaks of Otter, Liberty (Bedford), and New London. He was defeated by Jubal Early at the Battle of Lynchburg, June 17-18, 1864, effectively ending his raid.

This dramatic documentary is told primarily through first person accounts by the soldiers and civilians who lived it.
