UVA’s McCarthy, Bard win in opening round of match play at US Amateur

uva-logo-new2Virginia golfers Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) picked up wins in the opening round of match play at the 114th U.S. Amateur Championships taking place in Johns Creek, Ga., at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

McCarthy, a senior at UVA and the event’s No. 22 seed, defeated Jonathan Woo of Singapore 7&5.  Woo is a rising senior at Oregon and entered match play as the tournament’s No. 43 seed. McCarthy will compete against No. 54 seed Jonathan Chang, a junior at Rutgers, in the round of 32. They are scheduled to tee off at 10:15 a.m.

Bard, a sophomore at UVA, downed South Africa’s Zander Lombard 3&2 to earn his spot in the round of 32. Lombard was South Africa’s top ranked amateur player in 2013. Bard, the No. 24 seed, will compete against No. 56 seed Frederick Wedel of The Woodland, Texas, Thursday at 8:15 a.m. Wedel is a rising junior at Pepperdine.

The rounds of 32 and 16 will be contested Thursday. The tournament’s quarterfinal round is Friday with the semifinalsSaturday and finals on Sunday.
