Eleven UVA wrestlers placed in the Hokie Open, hosted Sunday by Virginia Tech at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. The Cavaliers’ day was highlighted by championships from George DiCamillo (R-So., Highland Heights, Ohio) and Joe Spisak (R-Sr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.
Ranked 10th nationally, DiCamillo rolled to four wins, culminated by a win by injury default over 12th-ranked Nick Soto of Chattanooga. DiCamillo held a 5-0 lead 58 seconds into the first period when Soto was forced to stop the match.
Ranked 14th nationally, Spisak cruised to four straight wins, capped by a 7-1 win over No. 16 Joey Ward of North Carolina. Spisak and DiCamillo each own 6-0 records this season.
Tyler Askey (R-Fr., Newnan, Ga.) was the runner-up at 184 pounds. Competing unattached, Nick Herrmann (Jr., Amarillo, Texas) placed third at 125 pounds.
Competing unattached, freshman Garrett Peppelman (Harrisburg, Pa.) took fourth place at 165. James Suvak (R-So., Parma Heights, Ohio) and Zach Nye (R-Jr., Enola, Pa.) placed fourth at 184 and 197, respectively. Nye cruised to a pair of wins before forfeiting the rest of the way.
Will Mason (R-So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Andrew Atkinson (R-Fr., Lynchburg, Va.) earned fifth-place finishes at 125 and 157, while freshman Dom Scalise (Latrobe, Pa.), competing unattached at 174, also nabbed a fifth-place finish.
Competing in the Freshman-Sophomore bracket, Cam Perry (Fr., Ellijay, Ga.) took fifth place at 141 pounds.
The Cavaliers return to dual competition Saturday (Nov. 15) at Memorial Gymnasium against No. 22 North Dakota State and Gardner-Webb. UVa then will play host to No. 2 Ohio State on Monday, Nov. 24, at John Paul Jones Arena.
