virginiaThe No. 15 Virginia women’s golf team got off to a fast start at the NCAA Regional at Stanford on Thursday. The Cavaliers shot 4-over 288 and finished the first of three rounds of play in second place. The regional’s top seed, No. 2 USC, is one shot ahead of UVA on the leaderboard while No. 12 Stanford is third at 289.

The top six teams from the three-day, 54-hole tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Freshmen Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) and Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) led Virginia by shooting even-par 71 at the Stanford Golf Course. Redding piled up 16 pars during her rounds while Gonzales had 12 pars to go with three birdies and three bogeys.

Seniors Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) are tied for 26th place at 2-over 73 and junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) finished the first round in 64th place with a 77.

Colorado State’s Katrina Prendergast, competing as an individual, had the day’s best round. She finished at 3-under 68. Only six of the 96 players in the field managed to break par.

UVa is making its 12th straight appearance at an NCAA Regional. The Cavaliers are looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the ninth time in the program’s 13-year history.

UVA will tee off from the first tee at 9:20 a.m. PT to start its second round while paired with USC and Stanford. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
