UVA tennis alum Somdev Devvarman leads India to second-round Davis Cup win

uva-logo-new2A pair of UVA men’s tennis alumni competed this last weekend (July 17-19) in the Davis Cup, Somdev Devvarman (2008) helped India to a 3-2 victory over New Zealand, while Treat Huey (2008) competed for the Philippines, in a 3-1 loss to Chinese Taipei.

Devvarman logged a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 singles victory over Marcus Daniell, helping India to its victory in the Group I Asia/Oceania second round.

Huey and his doubles partner Ruben Gonzales earned the Philippines’ lone point with a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) victory over Chinese Taipei’s Hsin-Han Lee and Hsein-Yin Peng in the Group II Asia/Oceania second round.

During the Davis Cup first round in March, Virginia alum Dominic Inglot (2009) competed with Jamie Murray for Great Britain, falling 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (8), 9-7 to Bob and Mike Bryan in doubles. The British squad advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Australia in the second round.

India joins Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Uzbekistan in the unseeded nations that will be drawn against the eight seeded nations in the World Group play-offs: Czech Republic (1), Switzerland (2), Italy (3), USA (4), Japan (5), Germany (6), Croatia (7), Slovakia (8).

The 2015 World Group playoffs will take place alongside the World Group semifinals on September 18-20. The eight winning nations will contest the 2016 World Group, while the eight losing nations will contest their respective Zone Group I event in 2016.
