UVA softball drops two on Opening Day

uva-logo-new2The UVA softball team rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning against BYU, but fell 5-4 in its season opener Thursday (Feb. 5) as part of the Kajikawa Classic at the Tempe Sports Complex. In the second game of the day, UVa (0-2) fell to Stanford, 11-3, in six innings.

The Cavaliers fell behind 4-0 to BYU (1-0), but rallied for four runs on a grand slam by freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.). To lead off the top of the seventh, senior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached on an error before sophomore Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) and senior Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.) each drew walks to load the bases. Up stepped Davis, who was 0-for-3 previously in the game before crushing the ball over the left field fence to tie the ball game.

The Cougars won the game in the bottom of the seventh when Coco Tauali’I doubled off freshman Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) to left and scored McKenzie St. Clair.

Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) started the game for the Cavaliers, allowing three runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.

McKenna Bull (1-0) picked up the win for BYU, allowing four runs (three earned) nine strikeouts in a complete game.

In the second game, Stanford defeated UVa, 11-3, in six innings. Sophomore Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) hit two home runs in the game, a two-run home run in the fourth and a solo shot in the sixth.

Madi Schreyer pitched three shutout innings for the Cardinal, before Haley Snyder (1-0) threw the last three innings for the win. Kayla Bonstrom went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to lead Stanford.

Alex Formby (0-2) allowed two runs in an inning of work, while Andie Formby gave up three in 1.2 innings. Davis allowed six runs in 3.1 innings of relief.

The action at the Kajikawa Classic continues Friday (Feb. 6) when the Cavaliers play UTEP at 11 a.m. Eastern.
