uva-logo-new2UVA women’s soccer junior forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) has been named the United States’ squad for next month’s FIFA U-20 Women’s world cup in Canada. Doniak was one of 21 players selected to the team, which looks to defend the Americans’ title at the event.

Doniak was a first-team NSCAA All-American last year, leading the ACC with 20 goals and 46 points. A 2013 MAC hermann trophy semifinalist, she recorded a goal or assist in 18 of Virginia’s 26 games, highlighted by a hat trick against Saint Francis (Pa.) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Over her first two seasons, Doniak has scored 30 goals and has 14 assists.

The American squad is led by head coach Michelle French. One of her assistants at the tournament will be Virginia assistant Jaime Frias.

To be eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, players had to be born on or after January 1, 1994.

The 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s world cup will be held August 5-24 in Canada, with games scheduled in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. The Americans are in Group B with Brazil, china and Germany. All United States games will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks with a total of 18 games from the tournament available live online through ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.

The United States are the reigning FIFA U-20 Women’s world cup champions, having won the title in 2012 in Japan. That team, led by Virginia head coach Steve Swanson, featured senior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.). The United States have won three of the previous six editions of the biannual tournament (2002, 2008, 2012).
