uva soccerUVA senior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named to the United States Women’s National Team for this month’s CONCACAF Women’s Championship, which will serve as qualifying for the 2015 FIFA Women’s world cup. Brian was the only collegiate player named to the 20-player roster.

The tournament will be held Oct. 15-26 in four locations in the United States. The USWNT is in Group A and will open group play on Oct. 15 against Trinidad and Tobago in Kansas City, Kan. The United States plays Guatemala on Oct. 17 in Bridgeview, Ill. (suburban Chicago) before concluding group play on Oct. 20 against haiti in Washington, D.C.  The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals, held Oct. 24 in Chester, Pa. (suburban Philadelphia). The championship match and third-place match are scheduled for Oct. 26, also in Chester.

The tournament’s champion, runner-up and winner of the third-place match will qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s world cup in Canada. The loser of the third-place match will have an opportunity to qualify through a playoff against a South American nation in November.

Brian has made 13 appearances for the USWNT since her debut in June, 2013, scoring two international goals. She has made 10 appearances for the team this year, including eight starts.

Former Cavalier Becky Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) was also selected to the team. The 2014 NWSL Defender of the Year with FC Kansas City has made 64 appearances for the USWNT over the past seven years. Virginia head coach Steve Swanson will be serving as an assistant on the USWNT coaching staff during the tournament, in addition to his coaching duties with the Cavaliers.
