The Virginia men’s soccer team already owned a win over a #1 team this season. Add a road win at #2 to the resume.
The lone goal of the night came in the 20th minute on a header from Nick Simmonds in a 1-0 ‘Hoos win at #2 NC State on Sunday night in Raleigh.
The loss is the first of the season for the Wolfpack (8-1-2, 1-1-2 ACC).
Virginia (7-1-2, 3-0-2 ACC) had earlier beaten then-#1 Wake Forest on Sept. 19, 6-3, in Charlottesville.
“This is a championship performance and a team performance. That’s all I have to say. A championship team performance,” UVA coach George Gelnovatch said. “These are the kind of performances from the team, and individually, but most importantly, from the team, that win you big games down the stretch in November and December.”
The breakthrough goal came off a short throw-in from Jesus De Vicente to Marco Dos Santos, who played the ball down the left wing back to De Vicente who looped a cross into a dangerous area in front of goal.
Rising above a group of Wolfpack defenders, Simmonds fired his header into the net to give the Cavaliers the advantage.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for the Cavaliers, and the fifth for keeper Casper Mols.
Up next: the Cavaliers will be back in action on Friday when they host to Notre Dame (6-2-3, 2-1-1 ACC) at Klöckner Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
