UVa. names football captains

Virginia football coach Al Groh announced today the captains for the 2009 season. The players, selected by a team vote this week, are OT Will Barker (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), LB Denzel Burrell (South Orange, N.J.), LB Aaron Clark (Fairfield, Va.), DT Nate Collins (Port Chester, N.Y.), CB Chris Cook (Lynchburg, Va.) and QB Vic Hall (Gretna, Va.). All six players are seniors on this year’s Cavalier team. Hall served as a captain on the 2008 UVa team.

“They are very good selections, all of them,” Groh said. “This was the first time we had so many guys on one side of the ball, offense or defense, wind up with virtually the same vote count. We checked our voting machines and didn’t find any hanging chads. We just went with the results.

“I think it is a real honor to be chosen by your teammates to be the captain. It is also an indication of what they think and the respect they have for these players. It was too close to deny any of these players the honor of being captain and to separate them from the core leadership structure. The players did a really good job of understanding the investment these kids have made and what it means to them and the example they have set,” Groh said.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
