UVA lands Stanford tight end Charlie Hopkins: Eligible for 2015

Chris Graham

UVaHelmet_1Stanford tight end Charlie Hopkins (Spokane, Wash.) has announced he will transfer to Virginia for his final year of football eligibility. Hopkins will graduate from Stanford in June with a degree in science, technology and society and will be able to play immediately for the Cavaliers. He will enroll in the Curry School of Education’s research, stats and evaluation program.

“Virginia was a good fit for what Charlie was looking for in terms of a graduate school program and we think he can be an asset to our tight end position and run blocking game,” said Virginia coach Mike London. “I like his maturity and what he will bring to our team from being part of a very successful Stanford program.”

Hopkins played in three games during the 2014 season and in all 14 games in 2013 for the Cardinal. After moving to the tight end position prior to the 2013 campaign, Hopkins caught two passes that season when Stanford went 11-3 and played in the Rose Bowl. That year he had receptions against San Jose State and UCLA.

Hopkins did not play in any games at Stanford during the 2011 or 2012 seasons where he began his career as a defensive lineman.

Hopkins graduated from Gonzaga (Wash.) Prep where he was named an All-American by PrepStar and ranked among the country’s top defensive linemen. He was rated the No. 15 defensive end in the nation by Rivals after earning all-state honors.
