Virginia men’s head basketball coach Tony Bennett has named seniors Mustapha Farrakhan, Mike Scott and Will Sherrill tri-captains of the team for the 2010-11 season.

“Mustapha, Mike and Will are among our most experienced players, having been in the program for three years,” Bennett said. “They have worked with me and my staff for more then a year and understand what we are trying to accomplish. Their experience and knowledge are valuable leadership tools for a team with seven freshmen on the roster.”

Farrakhan, a 6-4 guard from Harvey, Ill., has lettered the last three seasons for the Cavaliers. He averaged 6.5 points and 2.0 assists a game last season when he played in 30 games, starting 10. He scored in double figures 10 times, led the team in assists in nine games and shot 78.3 percent (47-60) from the free-throw line.

Scott, a 6-8 forward from Chesapeake, Va., is Virginia’s top returning scorer and has led the team in rebounding the last two seasons. He averaged 12.0 points and 7.2 rebounds a game last season, shot 50.5 percent (143-283) from the field and led the team with eight double-doubles. Scott has scored 804 career points and has 18 career double-doubles. He has lettered each of the last three seasons.

Sherrill, a 6-9 forward from New York, N.Y., joined the program as a walk-on and earned a scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year. He played in 30 games last season, starting seven, and averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds a game. Sherrill has lettered each of the last three seasons and was a member of the 2009-10 ACC All-Academic Team.

Virginia opens its 2010-11 regular-season schedule at home against William and Mary on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.
