UVA field hockey announces 2016 schedule

Chris Graham

uva field hockeyThe UVA field hockey team announced its 2016 schedule, with the Cavaliers slated to play 11 regular-season games at University Hall Turf Field.

Virginia, which advanced to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Championship, will face a schedule that features 10 tournament teams from last season. The Cavaliers’ home schedule is highlighted by visits from teams that have won the last four NCAA titles including reigning-champion Syracuse (Oct. 15), 2013 and 2014 champion UConn (Sept. 18) and 2012 champion Princeton (Sept. 16). The home slate will also feature a rematch of last year’s first round NCAA game against Delaware (Sept. 4).

The Cavaliers begin the regular-season at home hosting Miami of Ohio (Aug. 26) and complete their home slate by hosting James Madison (Oct. 30).

Challenging non-conference contests at Penn State (Aug. 28) and Maryland (Oct. 25) highlight the road schedule.

“Every year, we play a very tough non-conference schedule to prepare us for playing in the top-ranked conference in the nation,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “This year, we are excited to add UConn as an opponent and are also looking forward to facing Maryland again. We also have great in-state competition that will challenge us and make us a better team. With 11 home games this season, I know our fans are going to watch some fantastic hockey at Turf Field. ”

The postseason begins Nov. 3 with Wake Forest hosting the 2016 ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Virginia returns all but one player from last season, including 2015 National Player of the Year Tara Vittese and first-team All-American Lucy Hyams.

Admission is free for all regular-season field hockey home games.
