UVA will play at Ohio State in the 17th Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Tuesday, Dec. 1. This year’s Challenge, played over three days from Nov. 30-Dec. 2, will include 14 games. This marks the second consecutive season the Cavaliers will play their Big Ten/ACC Challenge game away from John Paul Jones Arena.
“With the round robin nature of the event, there comes a time in the rotation when teams must play on the road in back-to-back seasons,” Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said. “It was our turn to do so and we look forward to the challenge of playing a great Ohio State program.”
All 14 Big Ten teams and 14 of the 15 ACC teams will participate in the 2015 Challenge. Georgia Tech will not play in the 2015 event.
Virginia and Ohio State will meet for the first time in the Challenge and fifth time overall. The Cavaliers and Buckeyes last met in 1981 when Ralph Sampson poured in 40 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in UVa’s 89-73 win over Ohio State. The Buckeyes own a 3-1 advantage over the Cavaliers in the all-time series.
In 2014-15, Virginia captured the ACC regular season title for the second consecutive season en route to a school-record tying 30 victories and third round NCAA Tournament appearance. Ohio State finished the 2014-15 season with a 24-11 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Cavaliers have a 9-6 record, including a 4-4 road mark, in the Challenge. Virginia defeated Maryland, 76-65, in College Park last season.
ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioner’s Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN. Starting times for the 14 games have yet to be determined.
The Big Ten captured the Commissioner’s Cup last season, winning eight of the 14 matchups. The two conferences split the previous two events, winning six Challenge games each in 2012 and 2013. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges (1999-2008) while the Big Ten won the next three (2009-2011). In the event of a tie, the Commissioner’s Cup remains with the conference that won the previous year.
2015-2016 Men’s Basketball Season Ticket Information
Season ticket renewals for the 2015-16 season will begin on Monday, June 1. The season ticket priority-ordering deadline for renewals is Aug. 7.
Fans interested in purchasing new season tickets should complete the season ticket request form online. Requests for new season tickets will be filled based on Virginia Athletics Foundation Priority Point order beginning Aug. 24.
Season tickets are expected to sell out for UVa’s 15-game home schedule. The ACC will release the complete schedule in late August.
