UVA Basketball alum Malcolm Brogdon may not be done with hoops just yet

I was worried that the constant injury issues that have plagued UVA Basketball alum Malcolm Brogdon, who only played 24 games with the Washington Wizards this past season, and has only been on the floor for more than 60 games three times in his nine-year NBA career, would finally come to a head for our guy.

But it’s looking like Brogdon, a career 15.3-points-per-game scorer, isn’t done just yet.

Law Murray, a reporter with The Athletic, noted in a recent podcast that the Los Angeles Clippers are interested in Brogdon, who is an unrestricted free agent now that the final year of the two-year, $45 million deal that he signed in 2023 is up.

“At the very least, there will be some consideration there,” Murray said. “He fits everything that the Clippers look for as far as a point guard who can shoot, who has positional size. That’s like a bullet on the board there.”

The Clippers did have interest in Brogdon when the Boston Celtics were shopping him around in 2023, before getting cold feet on a possible three-team deal involving the Celtics and Wizards that was to include Kristaps Porzingis and Marcus Smart.

Porzingis and Smart were later included in a three-team deal with the Memphis Grizzlies that sent Tyus Jones to Washington.

The Celtics ended up dealing Brogdon to Portland as part of a swap involving Jrue Holiday, and Brogdon landed in DC in a one-for-one for a guy named Deni Avdija.

Brogdon played 39 games for Portland in 2023-2024 and the aforementioned 24 games with the Wizards in 2024-2025.

When he was on the floor this past season, he was still productive – averaging 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game, but his shooting numbers were way down: he shot 43.3 percent from the field and a career-worst, by far, 28.6 percent from three.

Brogdon, with the Clippers, would be a depth guy. James Harden (22.8 ppg, 8.7 assists/g in 2024-2025) is the starter at point guard, with nine-year veteran Kris Dunn (6.4 ppg, 2.8 assists/g in 2024-2025) and former #1 overall pick Ben Simmons (5.0 ppg, 5.6 assists/g in 2024-2025) splitting time as the second option.

Dunn is under contract for two more years at $5.4 million for 2025-2026 and $5.7 million for 2026-2027, while Simmons is a free agent.
