Ninth-ranked Virginia, which is not long for being ninth-ranked Virginia, simply failed to show up on Saturday, as is evidenced by the final score in the 17-0 run-rule loss at Boston College.
As I wrote yesterday, this isn’t your father’s Boston College (20-8, 8-3 ACC), which has now won three ACC series in four weekends, and will go for the sweep on Sunday.
And the 17 part of 17-0 is what happens when you wave the white flag and throw back-of-the-bullpen guys out there to get some work.
Starting pitcher Max Stammel (2-2, 7.14 ERA) was awful – nine runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings, four extra-base hits allowed, two of them homers.
The two positives: no walks or hit batters!
The zero part of this is unacceptable – no runs on just three hits.
Virginia (21-7, 6-5 ACC) came in averaging 8.4 runs and 9.7 hits per game in ACC play, ranking second in both categories.
No runs on three hits is giving up.
Baseball is a long season – 56 games for D1 college teams.
You can’t afford to just give them away.
Next up
The series finale is set for a 1 p.m. Sunday first pitch.
