The Richmond baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision to Marist Friday in the series-opener at Pitt Field. Marist starter Dan Zlotnick held the Spiders to just a run over 5.1 strong innings to get the victory.

Mike Mergenthaler, Robby Massar and Derek Boliek each had two of Richmond’s eight hits, but the Spiders (3-6-1) left 10 runners on base in the game.

The Red Foxes (4-3) jumped on starter Jacob Mayers with two in the first inning and never looked back. Richmond shaved the margin to 2-1 in the second thanks to Massar’s single, but Marist got that run back in third and tacked on three late insurance runs.

The Spiders saw their best chance to score in the fourth after consecutive singles from Mike Small and Massar and Mergenthaler’s walk loaded the bases with one out. But Mayers lined into an inning-ending double play.

Mayers was dealt the tough-luck loss, allowing just three runs and five hits over seven innings.

Jon Schwind and Zack Shank each had two RBI for Marist.
