UNC rolls past Virginia Tech, 48-34

The Virginia Tech defense was expected to be a strength yet again in 2012. The D proved to be the weak link in another Hokie loss on Saturday.

North Carolina piled up 533 yards of total offense, with running back Gio Bernard gaining a career-high 262 yards on the ground, en route to a 48-34 win over Virginia Tech.

The loss drops Tech to 3-3. It’s the worst record after six games for the Hokies since the program opened 2-3-1 in 1992.

The Tar Heels (4-2, 1-1 ACC) led 28-20 at halftime and took control of the game in the third quarter with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Bryn Renner to Sean Tapley, a 44-yard field goal by Casey Barth and a 13-yard TD run by A.J. Blue sandwiched around a Dmitri Knowles 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Virginia Tech that left UNC up 45-26 at the end of three quarters.

Virginia closed to 45-34 with 8:55 to go in the game on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Logan Thomas to Corey Fuller and a two-point conversion pass from Thomas to Fuller.

Barth connected on a 40-yard field-goal attempt with 5:34 to extend the lead back to two touchdowns.

Virginia Tech drove into the Carolina red zone but came up short on a fourth-down play inside the three-minute mark, and the Heels ran out the clock from there.

Thomas had a big day stat-wise, completing 26 of his 49 pass attempts for 354 yards and two touchdowns. The running game never got untracked, gaining just 40 yards on 25 attempts.
