turkey trotThe Waynesboro YMCA Turkey Trot is back. Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 24, hundreds of locals and visitors from out of town will a fun morning of healthy fellowship.  The race has grown significantly over the last few years but the family focus is still the same.

“What a great opportunity each year to meet up with family, friends, and support the local YMCA. The race also allows you to eat guilt free later in the day because you have already worked out,” said Bret Figgatt, who has been part of the Y Turkey Trot since its inaugural year.

The 2015 Turkey Trot welcomed more than 400 runners, walkers and swimmers for the Turkey Trot 5K, 500-Yard Swim and Gobbler on the Greenway 1-Miler in 2015.

Last year’s event drew participants from 10 states, with family groups of 15 people and more taking part, said Jeff Fife, executive director of the Waynesboro Family YMCA.

“From serious athletes to folks that simply like a brisk walk before Thanksgiving dinner, it’s a great time for all,” Fife said.

Riverside Racing has joined on for this year’s Turkey Trot as the Y’s official raceday partner, providing timing for the Gobbler and 5K races as well as overseeing the online registration process.

“We are excited to have Riverside Racing on board this year,” said Fife.   “Longtime participants will see a difference in our race management.   Years ago we timed on stopwatches and popsicle sticks; now we have inflatable finish lines, chip timers, and a streamlined registration process.”

Blue Ridge Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is back for 2016 as the major sponsor of the event with DuPont Community Credit Union supporting as well.
