Traffic pattern changing at Rio Road East, John Warner Parkway

Contributors

john warner parkwayOn Monday, the Virginia Department of Transportation will adjust the eastbound lanes on Route 631 (Rio Road East) to improve traffic flow at the John W. Warner Parkway intersection.

The lanes will be re-striped so that eastbound through traffic will use the right lane to approach the intersection. Through traffic currently uses the left lane.

Motorists turning right will also use the right lane to reach a dedicated turn lane into the Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC). Left-turn traffic will continue to use the left lane.

These changes will more evenly distribute traffic volumes to move more vehicles through the intersection, relieve backups and reduce the hazard of last-minute lane changes.

New pavement markings and corresponding highway signs will be installed Monday. Motorists should watch for workers and slow-moving equipment in and near the travel lanes, and should be cautious over the next several weeks as the traveling public adjusts to the new traffic pattern.
