Toyota aims for Mississippi location

Story by Chris Graham

An automobile manufacturer that had visited an Augusta County location last year during its search for locations to house a new assembly plant has settled on a location in Mississippi.

Toyota announced today that it will build an auto-assembly plant in Blue Springs, Miss.

The plant will be built on a 1,700-acre site in Blue Springs.

Toyota had visited a proposed 1,600-acre megasite in the Weyers Cave area last year.

The new plant represents a $1.3 billion investment by Toyota – and will bring approximately 2,000 jobs to the Blue Springs region.

“We in Mississippi and especially North Mississippi are excited to have been chosen by Toyota as its partner,” Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said in a statement today. “Toyota is the world’s premiere auto manufacturer, and our state will be the best partner the company has.”

The new assembly plant, expected to be operational in 2010, will have the capacity to build 150,000 vehicles annually.
