Thunder, lightning, rain drown Squirrels, 4-0

richmond-squirrelsThe Trenton Thunder (39-34) defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels (38-33), 4-0, in a ballgame that was delayed by rain for an hour and 19 minutes at the outset on Thursday night at The Diamond.  The game was eventually halted for good in the sixth inning due to persistent severe weather.  It marked the first game the Squirrels have had shortened by weather this season.

Right-hander Kyle Crick’s night ended before it really began, as he failed to get through the first inning.  His evening began after the delay with a walk issued to Jake Cave.  He then recorded the first two outs, but then walked Mark Payton before conceding an RBI single to Dan Fiorito.  Crick then walked Francisco Arcia before Tony Renda delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0.  Crick then issued his fourth walk of the inning, to Taylor Dugas, to force in a third run.  He was then lifted from the ballgame.  Righty Joan Gregorio finished the inning without further incident.

Crick (1-3) was charged with three earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning.  It marked the shortest start of his career, and he was saddled with his third loss of the season.  He allowed two hits, walked four and struck out just one.

Lefty Miguel Sulbaran started the game for Trenton and also worked just one inning.  However, Sulbaran retired the side in order and left for unspecified reasons.

Right-hander Caleb Cotham (4-2) followed Sulbaran and tossed three scoreless innings.  He earned the win in relief.  Righty Andury Acevedo came on and worked a scoreless fifth inning.

Trenton plated the final run in the top of the sixth inning before heavy rain and storms put a stop to the ballgame for the night.

The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Friday night at The Diamond.  Richmond LHP Kelvin Marte (6-0, 2.66) will make the start against Trenton LHP Caleb Smith (4-4, 4.47).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Fox Sports 910 and FoxSportsRichmond.com.
