They don’t play football at Turner Ashby to go 5-5. Much less to go 5-5 in back-to-back seasons.

The ’08 Knights don’t look like a 5-5 team.

Tanner Croy threw for three touchdowns, and Cole Hart and Jamie Fellers each ran for 100-plus as TA rolled to a 56-14 win over Waynesboro Friday night.

But coach Charlie Newman has some items to show his team this week in preparation for a tough road game at Chancellor, notably on defense, which surrendered 191 first-half yards to Waynesboro and let the Little Giants back into the game just before halftime on a 25-yard touchdown run by Stephen Brown and an 18-yard scoring pass from Chet Berry to Clyde Thompson that cut a 28-0 lead to 28-14.

“Those guys fought back good, and we knew they would – Brown, and their quarterback is a good player, completed some good passes down there,” Newman said after the game. “We came back from halftime, and I thought the kids refocused, and we said we’ve got to go out and play like we did in the first eight minutes, and we did. I thought the offense went out and played incredibly well. Defensively we did a great job. Just a couple of lapses there.”

The Turner Ashby D settled down in the second half, holding the Little Giants to -7 yards offense in the final two quarters and adding the final score of the game on a 12-yard fumble return by Chandler Knight, who also ran the ball eight times for 64 yards and a touchdown while on offense.

Hart led TA with 134 yards on 15 carries. Fellers ran eight times for 112 yards, all in the second half.

Croy connected on six of his 10 pass attempts for 120 yards.

Brown ran 12 times for 88 yards for Waynesboro before leaving late in the third quarter with a knee injury that put him on crutches for the endgame. Berry completed 12 of his 24 passes for 161 yards.
