Calendar 2013SWAG Writers (The Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta Group of the Virginia Writers Club) presents a Playwriting Workshop for beginning and intermediate writers interested in writing for the theater. The instructor is prize-winning playwright Chris Gavaler.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, February 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Meeting Room above Cranberry’s Grocery & Eatery (enter through the store) at 7 S. New St., Staunton. The workshop requires advance registration and payment of $40 (checks should be made payable to Virginia Writers Club) but participants need not be members of either SWAG or VWC. For more information and to register contact Cliff Garstang at [email protected].

This event is the first workshop to be offered by SWAG Writers, which also hosts an ongoing reading series for the purpose of elevating the profile of area writers and promoting the literary arts in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County by providing a forum for local and visiting authors to share their work. The group is made up of professional, aspiring, and hobby writers who also host a monthly mixer where members meet to network and socialize and read short excerpts of their work at an open mic. Writers interested in joining the group can contact Cliff Garstang at [email protected].

About the Instructor: Chris Gavaler is a novelist and playwright whose work has appeared in many literary venues, including Shenandoah, Prairie Schooner, and Black Warrior Review. He is the author of Pretend I’m Not Here, a suspense novel, and School for Tricksters, a novel in stories. He is also a four-time winner of Outstanding Playwright awards from the Pittsburgh New Works Festival. A visiting assistant professor of English at Washington & Lee University, he lives with his family in Lexington, Virginia.
