Stretch of Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County closing today for emergency repairs

Update: 2:15 p.m. The closure of eastbound Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County is expected to remain in place until about 10 p.m. today (Monday, February 1). Crews making emergency pavement repairs near Lexington need the extra time to make drainage improvements in order to ensure that the new pavement is durable enough for interstate traffic.

The work zone is on I-64 eastbound between exit 50 (Lexington/Kerrs Creek) and the junction of Interstate 81.

 

Original story: 10:54 a.m. Eastbound Interstate 64 is scheduled to close today (Monday, February 1) from about 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for emergency pavement repairs in Rockbridge County. The location is between exit 50 (Lexington/Kerrs Creek) and the junction of Interstate 81.

Through traffic on eastbound I-64 will detour at exit 27 in Alleghany County and follow Route 220 south. Drivers will then enter I-81 northbound at exit 150. The detour ends near mile marker 191, where eastbound I-64 merges with northbound I-81. Virginia State Police will enforce this detour route for all through traffic.

Local traffic only can reach the city of Lexington from eastbound I-64 by using exit 50, or from I-81 by using exit 188B or exit 195.

Signs and variable message boards on I-64 and I-81 advise motorists of the closure and guide them through the roughly 90-mile detour route. Work is scheduled to finish about 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
