Staunton has been ranked among the 50 best small town main streets in America by Top Value Reviews. The ranking was published on the organization’s website in October.
Staunton was ranked fifth.
To be considered for the top 50 ranking, towns were required to have at least one notable attraction and a population fewer than 60,000 residents (according to the 2010 census). Towns were chosen and ranked based on the following:
- inclusion on a major register, such as the National Register of Historic Places, National Parks, National Historic Landmarks, etc.
- category of downtown attractions (restaurants, wineries, antique stores, art galleries, etc.)
- notable and historic places
- national ranking of some kind
Staunton is located in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The hometown of President Woodrow Wilson, Staunton has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1747. Today, Staunton has a population of approximately 23,700 and is well known for its arts and culture.
Known for its historic architecture, Staunton is best explored by foot. Its compact downtown features over one hundred unique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Staunton’s Beverley Street was the first in the state to win the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Great American Main Street Award. The city’s cultural institutions include the Dixie Theater movie house, Mockingbird Roots Music Hall, Heifetz International Music Institute, the outdoor Oak Grove Theater, and the American Shakespeare Center, housed in a landmark re-creation of London’s Blackfriars Playhouse.
