Staunton District Traffic Alert: July 25-29

road work transportationThe following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton District during the coming weeks.

The Staunton District is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 0 to 7, eastbound and westbound – Lane and shoulder closures as needed Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for storm cleanup around culverts, drain pipes and ditches.

Mile marker 2 to 4 and Exit 1 off-ramp, eastbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through July 29, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 10 to 7 including Exit 7 off-ramp, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through July 29, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 16 to 17, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as needed Wednesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for overhead sign maintenance.

Mile marker 36 to 31, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through July 29 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Watch for crews removing debris and trimming trees, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cleaning around culverts and drainage areas between mile markers 16 and 26. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) – Traffic lanes restricted to 8 feet 6 inches on temporary bridge during roadway alignment project for box culvert replacement over Crow Run.  Project will also use temporary traffic signals. Work zone is 0.45 mile west of Route 717 to 0.55 mile west of Route 17.  Commercial vehicles can use Route 18 as an alternate route. Estimated completion September 2016.

Various roads – Flood repairs at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 696 (Selma-Low Moor Road) – Flagger controlled eastbound lane closures between Route 1312 (Karnes Road) and Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) and shoulder closures on Route 1308 (Garland Road) and Chessie Avenue for soil testing. July 25-29, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Various roads – Flood repairs at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY                                                                                                                   

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris Monday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.Cleaning paved ditches and drop inlets between mile marker 53 and 51, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Single-lane traffic through work zone. Westbound drivers use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic limited to the right lane. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Estimated project completion summer 2017.

(NEW) Mile marker 55, eastbound, including the exit 55 on-ramp – Early morning “slow roll” closure Sunday, July 24 will affect eastbound I-64, including the Route 11 exit 55 on-ramp, and I-81 traffic northbound at mile marker 189 and southbound at mile marker 193. Flaggers will control traffic at the exit 55 on-ramp. Virginia State Police will perform rolling closures on I-64 and I-81 between approximately 6:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. so that utility crews can work on lines crossing I-64 at mile marker 53. All work is weather permitting.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 174 to 191, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures as needed Monday throughThursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for overhead sign maintenance.

Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches and trimming trees at various locations, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cleaning culverts, drain pipes and ditches between mile marker 177 to 179 and mowing stormwater ponds between mile marker 184 and 203 northbound, Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 188, northbound and southbound – Alternating lane closures 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Sundayfor bridge painting. Estimated completion August 12.

(NEW) Mile marker 189 northbound and 193 southbound – Early morning “slow roll” closure Sunday, July 24, will affect traffic at mile markers 189 and 193. Virginia State Police will perform rolling closures between approximately 6:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. so that utility crews can work on lines crossing I-64 at mile marker 53. All work is weather permitting.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 197 to 202, southbound – Right shoulder closures for fiber optic installation.  Monday to Friday. Estimated completion July 29.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Main Street, City of Lexington) – Nighttime single lane closures through July 29 for work on VMI pedestrian bridge construction. Isolated nighttime single lane closures beyond July 29 as needed for finalization of the project.

Various roads – Paving and patching, brush cutting, pipe replacement, tree removal, ditching, pothole repairs, and tractor and hand mowing with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (South River Road) – Alternating lane closures through July 29 for pavement treatment and marking from Route 631 (Old Buena Vista Road) to one mile north of Route 603 (Irish Creek Road). Sunday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Route 708 (Gilmore’s Mill Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement at Cedar Creek just east of Route 608 (Shafer Lane). Detour using Route 608 and Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway).  Estimated completion November 2016.

Various roads – Paving and patching, brush cutting, pipe replacement, tree removal, ditching, pothole repairs, grading, and tractor and hand mowing with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 220 – Flagger traffic control for shoulder repairs at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Route 250 – Alternating lane closures from Route 616 (Upper Fork Road) to Route 614 for paving and pavement marking. Sunday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Estimated completion August 3.

Route 250 – Flagger traffic control for patching operations at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 632 (Pines Road)Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pavement patching. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY  

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as needed Sunday to Friday for mowing, weed-eating and litter pickup.

Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, trimming trees, and cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion August 5.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Lane closures as needed for mowing, weed-eating and litter pickup. Monday to Saturday.

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, trimming trees, cleaning culverts, pipes and other drainage structures at various locations.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Shoulder work at mile marker 221 to 237, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile Marker 210, northbound – Overnight lane closures for bridge work, seven nights a week from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion July 29.

(NEW) Mile marker 214 to 212, southbound – Nighttime lane closures Sunday, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. for asphalt repairs.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 223 to 233, southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Saturday for fiber optics installation.Estimated completion July 29.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 781 (Bald Rock Road) to Verona Elementary School. Estimated completion August 31.

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Shoulder closure for fiber installation from Route 1920 (Sutton Road) to Staunton city limits. Estimated completion August 31.

Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) Alternating lane closures Sunday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., for paving and pavement marking from Pilot Truck Drive to Route 701 (Howardsville Road).  Estimated completion July 29.

Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Right shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures for utility work from Route 254 (Buffalo Gap) to Town of Craigsville.  Monday to Friday.  Estimated completion August 31.

Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Right shoulder closures for utility work from Route 613 (Spring Hill Road) to Route 728 (Stover Shop Road). Monday to Friday.  Estimated completion August 31.

(UPDATE) Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion August 5.

Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound lane closure/lane shifts from Staunton city limits to Route 1427 (Rowe Road) for utility work. Estimated completion August 31.

Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) – Bridge replacement over Whiskey Creek, just east of intersection with Route 722 (Vinegar Hill Road). Occasional lane or shoulder closures as contractors relocate utilities and build temporary bridge and approaches. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour. Traffic detours onto two-lane temporary bridge starting in early fall.

(UPDATE) Route 340 (Rosser Avenue, Waynesboro) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion August 5.

Route 340 (Main Street, Waynesboro) – Road closed between Constitution Park and East Avenue for replacement of South River bridge. Through traffic will use Broad Street (Route 250) as detour route. Local traffic has access to all businesses and residences throughout the project. Estimated completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion August 5.

Route 641 (Fishersville Road) – Intermittent lane and shoulder closures from Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) to Route 1360 (Westminster Drive) for water line upgrades. Monday to Friday. Estimated completion September 2016.

Route 685 (Lehigh Road, Craigsville) – Road closed for bridge replacement over Little Calfpasture River between Route 684 and Route 42. Detour in place. Estimated completion December 2016.

Route 836 (Green Hill Road) Weekday flagger traffic control with shoulder closures as needed at Route 42 (Buffalo Gap Road) intersection for concrete repairs. July 25 to August 11.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris, performing sign repairs and hand-mowing around signs. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Replacement of North River bridge. Watch for traffic shifts, shoulder closures and flagger controlled lane closures, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work zone from Route 694 to one mile south of Mount Crawford. Variable message boards and pavement markings direct motorists. Estimated completion July 2017.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) –  Single lane traffic controlled by flaggers from west city limits of Harrisonburg to .03 miles west of Route 701 (Silver Lake Road) for milling and paving operations.. Estimated completion July 29.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging as part of intersection improvements at Route 340 (East Side Highway). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October 2016.

Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Periodic flagging as part of intersection improvements at Route 253/659  (Port Republic Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October 2016.

Route 659 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging as part of intersection improvements at Route 340. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October 2016.

Route 704 (Cecil Wampler Road) – Flagger controlled, intermittent right shoulder and lane closures for installation of water lines. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work zone between I-81 and Route 679 (Pleasant Valley Road).  Estimated completion July 29.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday – Friday at various hours and locations.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 211 – Mowing operations Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion July 29.

Route 211 (Lee Highway) – Left lane closure 24 hours a day between Route 615 (Egypt Bend Road) and Route 641 (Ganders Drive) for bridge painting. Estimated completion August 19.

(NEW) Route 340 Business – Single lane closure with flaggers for inspection of bridge over South Fork Shenandoah River. July 25 and 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 340 – Intermittent flagging operations for replacement of bridge and approaches at Cub Run. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work zone speed limit is 45 miles per hour. Estimated completion September 2017.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work on Monday at various hours and locations.

Mile Marker 264, northbound and southbound – Nighttime single lane closures Monday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for bridge work over Route 211. Estimated completion July 29.

Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris and hand-mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Pothole repairs as needed.

(NEW) Mile marker 292 to 296, northbound – Nightly lane closures for milling, paving and pavement marking. Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion August 27.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 211 (Lee Highway) – Right shoulder closed 24 hours a day between Route 620 (Smith Creek Road) and Route 674 (Run Away Lane) for bridge painting. Estimated completion August 19.

Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Tuesday through Friday at various hours and locations.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 646 (Mount Hebron Road) – Single lane closure with flaggers for inspection of bridge over I-81.  July 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 663 (Artz Road) Bridge replacement over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. The road will remain open during construction of the new bridge, with flagger controlled traffic 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday. Estimated completion May 2018.

(NEW) Route 682 – Road closed July 25 to 29 between the north and south intersections with Route 679 (Rittenour Road) for pipe replacement. Detours: Northbound traffic will travel east on Route 681 (Stoneburner Road), south on Route 679, east on Route 675 (Stoney Creek Road), then north on Route 685 (Barbershop Road) to the end of detour. Southbound traffic will travel south on Route 685 (Barbershop Road), west on Route 675 (Stoney Creek Road), north on Route 679 and then west on Route 681 (Stoneburner Road) to the end of detour.

(NEW) Route 703 (Mount Jackson Road) – Flagger controlled traffic between Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) and Route 614 (South Middle Road) for paving operations. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion August 5.

(NEW) Route 763 (Patmos Road) – Flagger controlled traffic between Route 676 (Fravel Road) and Route 605 (St. Luke Road) for paving operations. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion August 5.

Queen Street (Route 1201, Town of Strasburg) – Road closed between South Massanutten Street and Holiday Street for bridge replacement over Town Run. Detour in place. Estimated completion November 2016.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Tuesday through Friday at various hours and locations.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Patching, pipe cleaning and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, July 25 to August 5.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

No lane closures reported.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris. Monday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pothole repairs as needed.

Mile marker 309 to 312, northbound and southbound Right and left shoulder closed 24/7. Speed limit 60 mph through work zone.  Motorists should be alert for trucks entering and exiting work zone. Estimated project completion May 2018.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW)  Route 37 (Northwestern Pike/City of Winchester) – Nightly right shoulder closures 0.74 miles south of the ramp to Northwestern Pike (Route 50) for replacement of traffic management equipment. Monday to Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Estimated completion August 5.

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange Project), northbound and southbound Speed limit on Route 37 reduced to 35 mph through the work zone. The newly built portion of Route 37 is now open.  Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersection with Route 642 (Tasker Road).  Estimated project completion May 2018.

(NEW)  Route 522 (North Frederick Pike/Cross Junction) – Nightly right shoulder closures 0.19 miles north of Route 682 (Chapel Hill Road) for replacement of traffic management equipment. Monday to Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Estimated completion August 5.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday and Tuesday at various hours and locations.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 604 (Star Tannery Road) – Road closed August 1 at 8 a.m. to September 2 at 3 p.m. for bridge replacement. The location extends from 0.65 miles south of Route 55 (John Marshall Highway) to 0.46 miles north of Route 603 (Brill Road).  Residents will have access to their properties during the closure. Through traffic will use these detours:  Northbound traffic will travel west on Route 603 (Brill Road), north on Route 600 (Pifer Road) and then east on Route 55 (John Marshall Highway) to the end of detour.  Southbound traffic will travel west on Route 55 (John Marshall Highway), south on Route 600 (Pifer Road) and then turn east on Route 603 (Brill Road) to the end of detour.

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange Project) – The speed limit on Route 642 is 45 miles per hour through the work zone. The newly built portion of Route 642 is now open.  Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersections with Route 37 and Route 847 (Hillandale).  Estimated project completion May 2018.

(NEW) Route 744 (Woodstock Lane) – Road closed from Route 1204 (Wilkins Drive) to Allen Drive (City of Winchester) July 26, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for utility pole replacement. Detour using Senseny Road to Purcell Avenue to Woodstock Lane.  Rain date July 27, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange Project) Newly built portion of Route 847 is open. Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersection with Route 642 (Tasker Road). Estimated project completion May 2018.

(NEW) Various roads – Ditching, pipe cleaning, shoulder work and pothole patching. Monday – Friday through August 5.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday and Tuesday at various hours and locations.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

INTERSTATE 66

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 15, westbound and eastbound – Watch for crews removing debris, mowing slopes and replacing mile markers. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pothole repairs as needed.

 

INTERSTATE 81

No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through summer 2016 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road).  Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Lane shift at 17th Street and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection, placing all traffic on the newly constructed bridge. 18th Street is open to traffic, with left turn restrictions until summer 2017. Estimated project completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement over the Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 643 (Howellsville Road) to Route 661 (Fairground Road).  Detours:  Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour. Drivers north of the bridge will follow Route 624 (Milldale Road/Red Gate Road) north and turn right on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour.  Estimated project completion June 2018.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
