Update: Friday, 9:30 a.m. Virginia State Police have released the identity of the man who died in the Wednesday accident on Interstate 64 in Fluvanna County.

The motorcycle’s operator, Robert C. Pollet Jr., 55, of Augusta, W.Va., was thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

Original story: Wednesday, 1:45 p.m. Virginia State Police Trooper J.R. Ruhlman is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash in Fluvanna County. The crash occurred Wednesday (Sept. 28), at approximately 3:40 a.m., in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64.

A tractor-trailer was traveling east on I-64 when it struck an eastbound 1994 Harley-Davidson near the 128 mile marker. The motorcycle’s operator was thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver, an adult male from Minnesota, was not injured in the crash. The driver initially thought he had struck a piece of debris, as the motorcycle was difficult to see in the patchy fog and heavy rain along this non-lit stretch of interstate. In addition, the Virginia State Police Crash Investigation Team was able to determine that the motorcycle’s taillights were dim due to the age of the motorcycle and partially obscured by the load strapped to the rear of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was wearing dark clothing, as well.

The crash remains under investigation. The Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

State Police are still in the process of notifying the motorcyclist’s next of kin.
