interstate 81A Spokane man faces multiple charges after fighting a Virginia State Police Trooper along Interstate 81 in Augusta County earlier this week. Jeremy P. Tylock, 38, of Spokane, Wash., is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail with attempted capital murder of a police officer, one count of resisting arrest with force, felony assault of a police officer and for being a pedestrian on the interstate.

Throughout the day Monday (March 21), state and local law enforcement had encountered Tylock walking along Interstate 81 and, at times, attempting to sleep along the shoulder. Each time, Tylock was directed to leave the interstate and, at one point, was cited for being a pedestrian on the interstate.

At approximately 4:41 p.m., Monday, Trooper J.D. Cash responded to yet another call for a man walking along the northbound shoulder of Interstate 81. Trooper Cash located the male subject near the 215 mile marker in Augusta County and pulled his marked patrol car onto the shoulder behind the man.

As Trooper Cash exited his vehicle, the male subject – later identified as Tylock – dropped his backpack, rushed the trooper and immediately began to fight him. During the altercation, Tylock punched the trooper in the face and the two ended up in the northbound lanes of I-81 with vehicles having to swerve and stop to avoid the pair.

Approximately five minutes into the struggle, Lt. C.R. Vandevander with the Middle River Regional Jail happened upon the scene and came to the trooper’s aid. Lt. Vandevander helped Trooper Cash handcuff Tylock. Within minutes Deputies with the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office had also arrived on scene and were able to transport Tylock to the jail.

Tylock was not injured in the incident. Trooper Cash was not injured, either.
