roddy barnes 4Roddy Barnes loves WTA’s Gateway. He finds it one of the best listening rooms in Virginia. And he wants to come back!

“We are more than happy to have Roddy back for a special concert,” says Clair Myers Producer of WTA’s Gateway. “When he asked to make an appearance on Thursday, June 6, we jumped at the chance to have him and his blues piano fill our space again.” The 8 pm performance will have “some of the sweetest blues piano” you’re likely to hear in the Shendonah Valley. The Special Barnes Concert is at 329 West Main in Dowtown Waynesboro.

Although he is now known as a blues and jazz pianist, Roddy Barnes was trained as a classical pianist. He made the transition to blues and jazz during study in France and subsequent graduate work at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He then moved to New Orleans where he absorbed the roots of American music before relocatin to Austin, Texas. There he became a member of one of the most exciting music scenes in the USA. Now living in Virginia, Barnes has released six of his own albums and has been featured on a variety of national radio programs. He has been invited to perform in several countries. Roddy is also a composers whose compositions have been recorded by many notable performers including Gaye Adegbalola and Ann Rabson, individually as well as by their group Saffire, and The Uppity Blues Women.

Blues Blast Magazine gave one of the best summary of Barnes talents. It said, “Barnes demonstrates that he is a multi-layered talent indeed, someone from whom one desires to hear more: an able songwriter whose songs are often laced with ironic wit; an expressive vocalist with a strong, clear tenor; and a masterful piano player who can romp with the boogie and play the blues.” They might have added that he is a great comic as well.

Tickets for the Special Roddy Barnes’ Concert are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. They are available on line (www.wtagateway.com) or by calling the box office (540-943-9999).
