Some, ahem, Bold Predictions

Chris Graham

I called a couple of things right last year – that the UVa. basketball team would lose 20 games and cost Dave Leitao his job (they lost 18, and Leitao is gone), and that UVa. would for financial reasons regret retaining Al Groh as its head football coach (and now they’re practically begging people to buy tickets, and not finding any takers).

I’m probably more often wrong than I am right, but whatever. It’s all for fun.

To the Bold Predictions:

– UVa. loses bad at home to TCU, lays an egg at Southern Miss, and after another bad loss, at UNC, Al Groh resigns, and offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon takes over on an interim basis. And leads the Cavs to a 4-4 record down the stretch, including a win over Virginia Tech in the season finale. And gets the job full-time after a national search that pees off Wahoo Nation, considering.

– Alabama handles Tech in their opener, Tyrod Taylor struggles for a third straight season, Tech ends up 8-4, loses at Virginia, and ends up in a third-tier bowl.

– Georgia Tech wins the ACC. Paul Johnson’s triple-threat option dominates ACC defenses. UNC is a close second in the Coastal.

– Miami limps home to a 6-6 finish. Randy Shannon is done by December.

– Florida State wins a depleted Atlantic Division, but is still a shell of its former self.

– Duke … is still Duke. Sorry, Dave Cutcliffe. You’re no Steve Spurrier.

– JMU gives Maryland all it can handle on Sept. 12 at College Park. The Terps are notoriously slow starters.

– JMU ends up missing the I-AA playoffs. The CAA is mighty tough again this year. And as the old saying goes, When you’ve got two quarterbacks, that really means you don’t have a quarterback.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
