Solid outing from Brett Sasse, sloppy Woodstock D, contribute to big Waynesboro win

generals-woodstock3Ryan Bennett threw seven hitless innings for Woodstock, but five River Bandits errors led to four Waynesboro runs, and the Generals took advantage in a 6-0 win Monday night.

Generals starter Brett Sasse (1-1, 2.10 ERA) pitched a gem himself Monday night, giving up two hits in a complete-game effort, striking out six without issuing a walk.

Sasse threw just 89 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Bennett (0-3, 2.18 ERA) struck out six and walked two, but was doomed by poor defense behind him. Three Woodstock errors in the second inning led to three Waynesboro runs, and a pair of fielding miscues in the seventh added a fourth Waynesboro run.

Otherwise, Bennett put in four perfect 1-2-3 innings in his seven innings on the mound.

Waynesboro finally got a hit in the eighth, when Enderson Velasquez greeted Woodstock reliever David Marriggi with a leadoff single. Michael Brosseau walked, and the two runners were sacrificed to second and third.

Kevin Phillips followed with a two-run single that made it 6-0 Generals.

Sasse cruised from there, retiring the side in order in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Waynesboro (11-13) pull into a tie for third place in the South Division with Charlottesville, which split a doubleheader with Charles Town Monday night.
