Snapchat threat at Augusta County high school investigated, determined to be prank

augusta countyAn apparent prank threat posted on Snapchat involving Fort Defiance High School led to an hours-long investigation by the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.

Several students received the message, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office, and a parent contacted authorities.

Deputies were dispatched to the residence of a student determined to be responsible for the posted threat, and determined that the threat was a prank.

According to the media release, the post was a recording from an unnamed movie.

“I would like to commend the students and parents for immediately contacting the ACSO so the post could be investigated,” Augusta County Sheriff Donald L. Smith said.

Fort Defiance High School will operate on its normal schedule on Friday, according to the media release.

The sheriff’s office will have additional deputies on location throughout Friday as a precautionary measure so that parents and students know they are safe.
