Arts Council of the ValleyThe Arts Council of the Valley September exhibition at Smith House Galleries features painting machines created by Alden Hough.

The opening reception for Not By Accident is 5 to 8 pm during First Fridays Downtown Sept. 6. ACV’s Lead Sponsors are Atlantic Union Bank (First Fridays Downtown) and Kathy Moran Wealth Group (Smith House Galleries 2019 Art Series).

Hough’s exhibition features machines that make paintings, along with the large acrylic and oil paintings made using these machines. Not By Accident is primarily “an exploration of process,” Hough said.

Hough has shown his work at Arts Field NC, Artisans Loft, and Bath County Juried Shows, as well as a Bridgewater College Senior Solo Exhibition. He completed a residency at Salem Art Works, and has won awards for his sculpture at the Bath County Juried Show.

“I want to bridge the world of art and engineering through the creation of five machines designed and built to apply paint onto a canvas.” He explained that the entire process of the creation of a painting for each machine will be recorded in HD quality, with the video displayed next to each of the machines.

“This method of presentation will allow viewers to not only view the final painting, but will also allow them to watch the process of the painting being made…along with the machine that created the painting,” he added.

Smith House Galleries, 311 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, is open Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturdays (Sept. 7, 14 & 21 ) from 10 am to 2 pm. The exhibition will be open through Friday, Sept. 27.
