Slam lifts Lynchburg to 8-3 win over Dash

lynchburg hillcatsLeVon Washington’s grand slam in the top of the eighth inning propelled Lynchburg to an 8-3 victory over Winston-Salem on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The Hillcats have won each of their last four series.

 

SMALL BALL…AT FIRST

Lynchburg scored in the first inning when Paul Hendrix drove a single that scored Yhoxian Medina, who led off the game with a base hit, to give the Hillcats a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Winston-Salem tied the game on a solo home run by Eddy Alvarez, but Lynchburg took the lead back in the top of the fourth. Eric Haase led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Claudio Bautista. Ivan Castillo then lifted a ball into center field that scored Haase from third to give the Hillcats a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nolan Earley recorded his second home run of the year on a solo shot that landed on the pedestrian bridge in right field to tie the game at two. The Dash took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Jeremy Dowdy scored on a fielding error by Castillo.

 

TIME FOR THE LONG BALL

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the eighth, Paul Hendrix reached on an error, Mike Papi walked, and Eric Haase singled to load the bases. With two outs on the board, Yhoxian Medina was hit by a pitch that scored Hendrix from third and gave the Hillcats the tying run.

With the bases still loaded, LeVon Washington smacked a grand slam into the right field seats for his second home run in as many nights to give the Hillcats a 7-3 lead.

On the very next pitch, Clint Frazier recorded his 12th home run of the year with a laser over the left field wall that extended the lead to 8-3.

CLOSING THE DOOR

Antonio Romero entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and allowed just one hit to finish off the contest with two scoreless innings. Luis Lugo earned another no-decision after turning in a quality start with 6 2/3 innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out five.

 

KEEPING UP WITH THE CATS

LeVon Washington went 3-for-4 at the plate for the second consecutive night and hit a home run in each game…Washingtonfinished the series going 6-for-8 with two home runs and eight RBIs…He now has 21 RBIs in 23 games…Antonio Romeropitched two scoreless innings in his first appearance since a spot start in Columbus…Romero has set a team-high for consecutive scoreless innings pitched with 18 2/3 scoreless innings.
