Sherrill out with fractured fibula

Chris Graham

Virginia forward Will Sherrill suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg in the Cavaliers’ 87-79 victory at Minnesota on Monday (Nov. 29).

It is uncertain how long the 6-9 senior will be out of action. Because of the nature of the injury, Sherrill will progress as his tolerance to activity indicates and will play when he is functional without pain. It is anticipated that will be in less than six weeks.

Sherrill was injured during the second half of Monday’s game. He has played in all seven of Virginia’s games this season and started the last four.

One of Virginia’s tri-captains, the New York City native is averaging 6.3 points and 3.4 rebounds a game. He is shooting 50 percent (16-32) from the field, including 54.5 percent (12-22) from three-point range.

“Will has been playing well for us,” Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said. “I’ve been happy for him. He’s really been providing good leadership. This is something we’ll certainly have to adjust to and throw another one of the first years in the mix. It is certainly an opportunity and a challenge for them.

“I feel for Will because he was coming along nicely and gave us a great lift in the Minnesota game in the second half.”

Sherrill scored all six of his points against Minnesota in the second half before he was injured.

Sherrill has lettered each of the last three years for the Cavaliers. He joined the Virginia program as a walk-on and received a basketball scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year.
