Shenandoah Valley Art Center: January 2013 Schedule

AFP

svacThe Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of January, is exhibiting the artwork of Staunton artist, Steve Kizer, a graphic designer by trade.  Kizer relies on a variety of media and techniques to realize his compositions.

Papering canvases with ephemera is typically the starting point for collaged backgrounds, providing depth and texture akin to the beautiful cycle of decay and renewal found in the environment and street art. Creating images that draw upon influences of masters, past and present, suggesting structural and fantastic space are a part of his exploration of mental landscapes.

The artist approaches his work through inquisitive openness and feels pulled along by process.  He finds his art continuing along a narrative of self-realization, merging a tradition of planned graphic notes with a sense of organic spontaneity.  This approach mixes intention with the subconscious which unlocks forms and liberates ideas that grow the artist to places previously unknown.  Even though he has recently been painting more in his image making, Kizer favors printmaking and enjoys exploring methods of image transfer.

An Opening Reception and Artist Talk will be held January 12, 6:00 – 9:00pm and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artist.

In the Hallway Gallery, The Paletteers, a local women’s painting group including Peg Sheridan, Sue Rosen, Carol Varner, Pat Garnett, Joy Tarter and others will be exhibiting   In the Member’s Gallery a display of members’ works inspired by the color blue will be featured.

Come join the new Art Groups, a gathering of folks seeking creative inspiration, camaraderie, and sharing of techniques with no cost to SVAC members.  Lynne Noel will be leading a group for beading each second and fourth Tuesday, while Kathryn Matthews will be leading the Artist’s Playground, 11am – 1pm on the second and fourth Thursdays. This is a chance to paint, draw, or otherwise get creative. Art Trading Cards is back!  This group of artists meets each third Thursday from 11am – 1pm to create tiny works of art for trading or framing. Bring a lunch, join a group, and be ready to learn, laugh, and get motivated!
