The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of April, is exhibiting in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the artwork of Sandra Luckett.
Awakening is a multi-media exhibit that is a monument to spiritual rebirth. Luckett states that the concept arose from her grief over our current “collective experience.” She finds our world feels hateful and the political climate very disturbing.
Initially she created a shrine to Shiva, the Hindu god of annihilation and regeneration, with a hope that destruction might lead to a civil revolution of tolerance and kindness. She continued to build the exhibit around this idea; every creative decision was made with consideration for shrines of hope and her vision of a better world. Luckett earned her MFA at VCU and is currently a professor of painting and installation at the University of Central Arkansas, where she blissfully guides students to be their best creative selves.
Recently honored as a “Woman to Watch” by the National Museum of Women In The Arts for her photography work, Sandra is not content to limit her creative impulses to any one medium. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout the US and Europe. She was born in California, raised in New York, and has lived in thirteen states. Her interests include music and road tripping.

In the Members’ Gallery, the theme Yellow will be interpreted by SVAC members through a variety of media and creative ideas. The member/artists will be opening the exhibition on April 6.
Check out the newest FREE program: ART Sparks: Lunch Preview. Joy Tartter, SVAC studio artist, will be on hand every Wednesday at noon with a preview of a new art instruction video. Bring a brown bag lunch and settle in to watch the screening. Maybe your interest will be sparked and you will be inspired to learn something new!
If that something grabs you, Joy will be playing the entire video again on the Saturday afternoon of the same week. Weekly Painting Group is a meeting of artists who want to paint! The group will gather at SVAC most Thursdays. Take advantage of your fellow artists for inspiration and light critique, if you are interested. Come relax, share ideas or techniques, and independently work in the medium of your choice! Check out the SVAC sponsored classes for the month of April! For the young artist, the ever popular Saturday Art for Kids is designed as a program that expands upon art offered in school or as an art experience for the home schooled. The classes are taught by artists who are amazing with kids. All supplies and snacks are included for children ages 6 – 10. Due to heavy demand, children must be registered on the SVAC website or by calling 949-7662. (April 6, 13, 20, & 27, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., $15 per class)
