The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of December, is exhibiting in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the Annual Winter Contemporary Juried Exhibition: Women’s Work, a collection of cutting edge artwork that seeks out works that push boundaries in terms of subject, presentation, or materials.
This year’s show features work from: Inez Berinson Blanks, Colleen Conner, Eileen Doughty, Claudia Furlow, Gail Haile, Anne Hanger, Sarah Lapp, Kay Lipscomb, Alexa Luna, Piu Mahapatra, Sue McCoy, Karen Rosasco, Susan Rosen, Peg Sheridan, Amanda Smith, Nancy Spahr, Paige Speight, Astrid Tuttle, and Christine M. Watts. Juror, Joan H. Ranzini, carefully selected the works to create lively interactions and a snapshot of contemporary work from women in our region. The exhibition is December 1 – January 19, 2019 with the opening reception on December 8, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The public is encouraged to come and meet the artists.
In the Members’ Gallery, the theme is Small Works, presenting a variety of media and creative ideas by SVAC member artists. These are small unique pieces ready for purchase and suitable for holiday gift giving.
Looking for the distinctive holiday gift? Come to SVAC’s newest gallery at 416 W. Main Street for the Shenandoah Valley Art Center’s Holiday Market. Formatted like a farmer’s market, the artists will fill their space with handcrafted artwork: jewelry, pottery, paintings, prints, sculptures, handmade soaps, plus a Pop-up Shop and refreshments. This will be a fun and festive event to kick-off holiday shopping. The market will be December 7, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., December 8, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Take home the perfect gift while supporting your local artists.
Check out the SVAC sponsored classes for the month of December! For the young artist, the ever popular Saturday Art for Kids is designed as a program that expands upon art offered in school or as an art experience for the home schooled. The classes are taught by artists who are amazing with kids. All supplies and snacks are included for children ages 6 – 10. Due to heavy demand, children must be registered on the SVAC website or by calling 949-7662. (December 1, 8, & 15, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., $15 per class)
Open studio opportunities in the Virginia Ross Education Studio are available to printmakers and ceramic artists. Access to top of the line clay and printmaking equipment and space to work will be furnished for $60 per quarter. Apply on line at www.SVACart.com.
The art center is a retail alliance partner with the Artisan Center of Virginia and ACV Trail Site. In the SVAC Gift Shop you can find the perfect creative gift in fiber, jewelry, wood, glass, pottery, and more by juried artisans from Virginia and SVAC member artists.
