shenandoah universityShenandoah University has added 15 new majors and minors to its list of degrees and certificates that students can earn.

The university currently offers more than 100 academic programs in seven different schools.

“The world is moving fast and needs higher education to meet those needs, and this is core to our mission at Shenandoah,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs Adrienne G. Bloss, Ph.D. “One of the goals in the strategic plan, under the first theme of transformative learning, is to build on existing strengths to create new disciplinary, interdisciplinary and interprofessional programs that will produce graduate students who are competitive, forward-thinking and prepared to meet societal needs. These new programs are perfect examples.”

New minors include data science; criminology; computer science; public relations; professional and popular writing; and health communication.

SU is also offering a new Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity; a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology Recreation; a Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine; a Physician Assistant Studies & Master Of Public Health Dual Degree Program; an Undergraduate Certificate in Health Humanities; a film studies major; a Graduate Professional Studies Certificate in Gifted Education; a Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine; and a Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Public Health Dual-Degree Program.

The department of mathematical sciences has started several new programs with a focus on technology, including its Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity.

“Our new BS in cybersecurity will blend mathematics and computer science along with key knowledge in digital security,” said Jessica O’Shaughnessy, department chair and associate professor of mathematics. “Cybersecurity is a growing field with a strong need for qualified individuals in the workforce. There are cyber attacks every day in the news, from the 2016 election to the breaches in Equifax and Target. We are hoping to pair with industry to train students to keep people’s information safe.”

The minor in data science will investigate the use of data using statistics, mathematics and computer science, while the minor in computer science will provide a strong foundation in computer programming and a broad look at other computer science courses.

“Programming is becoming a necessity in many fields as computers are able to solve problems faster than humans,” O’Shaughnessy said.
