Attorney General Mark Herring announced this summer’s “Virginia Rules” camps, a series of summer day camps that will provide opportunities for young people to build positive relationships with law enforcement officers within their community, have outdoor camp-style experiences, and learn about Virginia law. This summer, Attorney General Herring is sponsoring more Virginia Rules Camps than ever, with camps being held in Pittsylvania, Richmond, Chesapeake, Albemarle/Charlottesville, and Norfolk. The camps are a partnership between the Office of Attorney General and local law enforcement partners.
“I’m proud we’re expanding Virginia Rules Camp across the Commonwealth so more kids can build relationships with law enforcement officials in their communities, enjoy outdoor activities, learn about the law, and have a great time in the process,” said Attorney General Mark R. Herring. “When kids spend time with local law enforcement officials it builds a sense of community, helps prevent crime, and gives kids the tools they need to make good decisions. Because of the hard work of localities and law enforcement agencies, more kids than ever are now able to benefit from these critical lessons at Virginia Rules Camp and have a lot of fun, too!”
Children participating in Virginia Rules Camp will build relationships with local law enforcement officers as they guide campers through various activities. Camps feature law enforcement presentations such as K-9 and rescue squad demonstrations, outdoor activities like hiking, crafts and team building, and Virginia Rules modules. The program’s modules cover topics ranging from alcohol and tobacco to drug prevention, bullying, relationship violence, gangs, and traffic laws.
Virginia Rules, a signature project of the Office of Attorney General, is Virginia’s law education program to help middle and high school students make good decisions, avoid breaking laws, and become responsible, active citizens within their schools and communities. In August 2014, Attorney General Herring announced a statewide expansion of the program, following successful pilot projects in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. He has made it a top priority to expand this critical program and in FY2015 Virginia Rules reached 44% more students than the previous fiscal year.
Attorney General Herring will attend all five Virginia Rules Camps to speak with campers and participate in activities:
