Senator Tim Kaine challenges eventual GOP nominee to three general election debates

Tim KaineSenator Tim Kaine is challenging the winner of the June 12 Republican primary to a series of three general election debates in the 2018 Senate election in Virginia. At these debates, Virginia voters will be able to learn more about both candidates as they decide who to support in November.

“Virginians face a stark choice in this election, and these three debates will provide voters with critical information. We hope the eventual Republican nominee will agree to them,” said Kaine campaign spokesman Ian Sams. “While Tim Kaine is fighting for a Virginia that works for everyone, where jobs, health care and education are available to every Virginian, the Republicans are trying to out-Trump each other with an agenda that would hurt the economy, block efforts to reduce gun violence, and strip health care away from millions of Americans and countless Virginia families. The debates will crystallize that choice.”

Kaine is accepting invitations to the following three debates:
  • The Virginia Bar Association debate – The VBA debate is the historical first debate of Virginia’s top-of-ticket general election, and this year’s debate will be held at the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va., in July.
  • The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, George Mason University, NBC 4, and Capital One debate – The NOVA Chamber has historically hosted a Northern Virginia-based debate for top-of-ticket general elections in Virginia, most recently in 2017 between Ralph Northam and Ed Gillespie. The debate will be held in Northern Virginia in September.
  • The WTVR/WCVE debate in Richmond – The People’s Debate, hosted by WTVR (CBS6 in Richmond) and partner organizations, was a critical debate in both the 2012 and 2014 U.S. Senate elections in Virginia. A debate sponsored by WTVR and WCVE will be held on a TBD date in Richmond this year.
Kaine will also participate in additional forums and joint appearances across Virginia in the general election.
