Sen. Tim Kaine applauds vote to fund Homeland Security

AFP

tim kaine-newU.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement today on Senate passage of a clean bill to fully fund the Department Of Homeland Security (DHS) for the remainder of the fiscal year.

“I am pleased the Senate has acted responsibly to pass a clean bill that fully funds the Department of Homeland Security, no political strings attached. It’s my hope that Republicans in the House of Representatives will act swiftly to approve this measure and avoid a needless shutdown of an agency that is absolutely critical to protecting our national security. With 17,000 Virginians who work for DHS and the U.S. Coast Guard, funding this agency is also about giving these public servants and their families peace of mind that come Monday, they can focus on the work of protecting the American people without worrying about receiving their paychecks.

“And if House Republicans are ready to have a conversation about how we can replace the President’s executive action with real legislation to fix our broken immigration system, I’m all for it. But we can have that debate without holding funding for the third largest government agency hostage.”

Everything you wanted to know about a heat dome, but were afraid to ask

A “heat dome” is worse than a “heat wave,” I’m learning, because “heat dome” refers to hot weather that can last a week or more, while a “heat wave” can be over in as few as three days.

With the heat dome on its way, PETA is urging people who see a dog chained outside in the sweltering heat to call authorities immediately – or to call PETA, if they don’t get the help they need from their local cops.
