A family safely escaped a fire this morning in Scottsville with no injuries.

At 10:55 a.m., career and volunteer units from Albemarle County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of East Main Street.

One adult, two children and five pets were home at the time of the fire. The displaced residents, including an additional adult who wasn’t home at the time of the fire, are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

It is believed the fire may have been accidentally started by discarded smoking debris.

The fire is under investigation by the Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office.
