Sam Rasoul wins Democratic Party nomination in 11th House District

The House Democratic Caucus congratulates Sam Rasoul on his well-deserved victory in today’s Democratic Firehouse primary in the 11th House District.  Turnout was much higher than expected at the Roanoke Civic Center where Democrats gathered to pick the next delegate for the 11th District.

Sam-Rasoul“We are incredibly excited to have Sam Rasoul carrying our banner in Roanoke,” said House Democratic Leader David Toscano.  “We look forward to working with him to ensure that this seat stays blue. We expect a spirited campaign and plan to spend the next thirty days working hard for every vote.”

“I am proud to accept to the Democratic nomination for House District 11,” said Sam Rasoul.  “ I was raised in Roanoke, by Roanoke and today Roanokers responded to my dedication to this community.  We ran a grassroots campaign focused on the people to win the nomination and I plan to continue running a strong effort throughout the special election.”

“While we will certainly miss the leadership of Del. Onzlee Ware, we know that Sam Rasoul will make an excellent representative for Roanoke,” said Caucus Chair Mark Sickles.  “Sam Rasoul will be a strong advocate for the Roanoke Valley and will be a welcome addition to the House Democratic Caucus.”

The Special Election to fill House District 11 will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7.  Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters can vote at their normal polling place.

 

Update: 8:52 p.m. Rasoul won the four-way race by 44 votes. Rasoul received 846 votes, with runnerup Dave Trinkle getting 802 votes. Trish White Boyd was third with 522 votes, and Court Rosen was fourth with 462 votes.

A total of 2,632 votes were cast in the primary, nearly double the projected turnout of 1,400.
