Salem Red Sox winning streak snapped

salem red soxThe Salem Red Sox had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Winston-Salem Dash with a 7-2 loss Thursday night at LewisGale Field.

The Dash (5-10) broke out to an early lead against Ben Taylor, who allowed three runs to score within the first four batters of the contest. Though he would settle down and retire the next three to face him, the damage was done and the Dash led 3-0.

The Red Sox (10-5) got a run back in the bottom of the first against Blair Walters, when Andrew Benintendi doubled and was brought home on a single by Nick Longhi to make it 3-1.

Taylor (0-1) surrendered another run in the third inning on a Louie Lechich bases-loaded single, but he was able to limit the damage and strand the bags full. The Dash added two more tallies in the fourth against Taylor to pad the lead and make it 6-1.

Ben Moore helped narrow the gap in the bottom of the fifth inning, when he crushed his first professional home run, a solo blast, to carve the score to 6-2. But Walters (1-0), would settle down and allow just the two runs in 7.0 innings of work. Moore finished the game 3-for-4 with the homer and two singles.

Taylor Grover was the first man out of the bullpen for the Red Sox, and did his job in keeping the score close, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings, fanning three Dash batters in the process. Yankory Pimentel worked in and out of trouble in the eighth, and allowed a solo home run to Brett Austin in the ninth to run the score to 7-2.

The Red Sox loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth against Euclides Leyer, but couldn’t bring a run home, as the Dash righty fanned Rafael Devers to end the inning. Kelvis Valerio allowed a two-out single to Moore in the bottom of the ninth, but hung on to seal the win.

Salem continues the series with Winston-Salem on Friday at LewisGale Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Red Sox will send Dedgar Jimenez (0-0, 2.70) to the mound opposed by Spencer Adams (1-0, 1.80) of the Dash. It’s a FreedomFriday presented by Freedom First Credit Union, with a post-game fireworks extravaganza as part of the iHeart Radio Fireworks series.
