Salem Red Sox walk off, win suspended game

Chris Graham

salem red soxThe Salem Red Sox defeated the Winston-Salem Dash in the resumption of a suspended game, 9-8 Thursday evening at LewisGale Field.

With the contest tied at seven heading into the top of the 11th inning, the game resumed with Simon Mercedes (4-2) pitching for the Red Sox (84-50, 41-24). He allowed a double to the first batter of the inning, Zack Collins, who scored on a one-out single from Toby Thomas to give Winston Salem (55-79, 27-37) an 8-7 lead.

Against Drew Hasler (1-1) in the bottom of the 11th, Jose Sermo and Rafael Devers collected one-out singles. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, and with two outs Mike Meyers drove a single to centerfield to score both and give Salem a 9-8 walk-off victory.

The win was the 10th walk-off triumph of the season for Salem, who owns the best record in the Carolina League. The Red Sox trailed at one point in the contest 7-0 after three-and-a-half innings and were down 7-3 heading to the last of the ninth before forcing extras. The game was originally suspended last night due to heavy rain in the area.

The Red Sox finish their series with the Dash Thursday night at LewisGale Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. LHP Trey Ball (8-5, 3.77) will take the mound for Salem, against RHP Zach Thompson (2-5, 6.00) of Winston-Salem.
