Salem Red Sox extend winning streak to seven

salem red soxThe Salem Red Sox never trailed Wednesday night as they pounded out 13 hits against the Carolina Mudcats, completing the sweep with a 9-2 win at LewisGale Field.

The top of the Salem lineup caused fits for Carolina starter Ryan Clark all game, starting with a leadoff double from Yoan Moncada in the first. Moncada and Mauricio Dubon would come around to score in the opening frame on a Danny Mars infield single and an error.

The Red Sox struck again in the third inning, when Moncada was chased home on an Andrew Benintendi triple. The triple from Benintendi was his seventh of the season, and extended his hitting streak to 22 games.

Salem pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning against Clark (0-3), when Moncada doubled and later scored on a Benintendi sacrifice fly.

Meanwhile, Dedgar Jimenez was dealing on the mound, spinning 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits in the process. Jimenez (1-1) notched his second quality start of the season and retired the final eight batters he faced.

The shutout bid ended in the seventh inning when the Mudcats plated a run against Mario Alcantara, but the Red Sox struck back in the bottom of the seventh against Chase Johnson-Mullins. Again the top of the order did the damage, with Dubon singling home a run and later scoring on an error as Salem erupted for four runs, sending 10 batters to the plate and pushing the score to 8-1.

Salem scored an additional run in the eighth against Evan Phillips, when Moncada scored on a Nick Longhi groundout. Dubon finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a walk and an RBI; Moncada also had a three-hit game, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, a walk, and four runs scored.

Alcantara threw the final 3.0 innings of the game allowing another tally in the ninth, but earned his first save of the year.

The Red Sox hit the road for a quick four-game jaunt to Winston-Salem to begin a weekend series with the Dash Thursdaynight at BB&T Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Salem will send Trey Ball (0-0, 4.50) to the mound, while Winston-Salem with counter with Matt Cooper (1-1, 3.54). Follow along with all the action on the Salem Red Sox Baseball Network.
