Despite a late two-RBI double from second baseman Jose Garcia, the Potomac Nationals held on to defeat the Salem Red Sox 5-2 at Pfitzner Stadium on Monday.
Garcia came up with two outs in the seventh and his team down by three, and delivered with a scorcher down the left field line that scored Blake Swihart and Carson Blair. But David Renfroe collected Salem’s only other hit, on a night when Potomac pitchers had the Sox’ number. Salem did draw six walks in the loss.
Heri Quevedo started and took the loss for the Red Sox. He gave up three runs in five innings. Noe Ramirez was solid for two and two thirds innings of relief, but failed to pick up a much-needed ninth out. With the Sox holding momentum following Garcia’s blast, Ramirez allowed a two-run double to Francisco Soriano with two outs in the eighth. The hit gave the Nationals important insurance runs that effectively took the wind out of Salem’s sails.
After Potomac starter Sammy Solis went four innings, David Fischer earned the win for the P-Nats in relief. He went two and two thirds innings and allowed two runs.
Game two of the four game series between the Red Sox and Nationals takes place at Pfitzner Stadium Tuesdaynight. Kyle Stroup will start for the Sox, opposed by A.J. Cole. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
